Louisiana ends brake-tag safety inspections for most passenger vehicles

CheckLouisiana inspection stations should plan for losing most passenger-vehicle inspection volume after January 1, 2027, keep commercial inspection capability, watch for OMV/LSP implementing rules by December 31, 2026, and confirm whether their parish is in the I/M area.
Details & evidence

Act 701 of 2026 (HB 1085) drops the periodic safety-inspection certificate requirement for noncommercial vehicles, effective January 1, 2027 in parishes outside the federal I/M program. In the I/M parishes the change waits for EPA approval of the state's SIP amendment. From June 30, 2026 to January 1, 2027, officers may not cite vehicles for missing inspection certificates. Commercial vehicles, covered farm vehicles and student-transportation vehicles still need inspections; the commercial inspection fee stays $30 with $23.75 kept by the station. The act also adds windshield-condition standards.

EPA extended certain PCE and CTC workplace-protection compliance dates

CheckIf your shop uses a PCE- or CTC-containing product under a condition of use that remains allowed and is subject to the Workplace Chemical Protection Program, update your compliance calendar to the extended dates. EPA's July 28, 2026 final rule extended selected Workplace Chemical Protection Program deadlines for entities subject to the PCE and carbon tetrachloride TSCA rules. Massachusetts clarified licensed-appraiser obligations for insurer-involved collision estimates

Details & evidence

The Massachusetts Auto Damage Appraiser Licensing Board adopted Advisory Ruling 2026-1 on July 14, 2026. The ruling explains that repair-shop registration no longer depends on employing a licensed damage appraiser, but insurer-involved appraisals, supplemental appraisals and related activity remain subject to 212 CMR 2.00.
