Where do your service-bay floor drains discharge?

EPA regulates motor vehicle waste disposal wells as Class V injection wells. New wells constructed after April 5, 2000 are banned nationwide; additional bans, permits, or closure obligations depend on the area and state. A service drain connected to a municipal sewer or qualifying off-site holding tank does not create this type of disposal well on that basis alone.

Quick check

Confirm whether drains lead to a sewer, holding tank, or underground disposal well; check with the UIC authority if a well may exist.

When this applies

A service-area sink or floor drain may send oil-contaminated or other vehicle-service wastewater into a septic system, dry well, or another shallow underground disposal system rather than a sanitary sewer or holding tank.

Trace where every service-bay drain and sink discharges. If motor-vehicle waste may reach a septic system, dry well, or similar underground system, contact your state or EPA Underground Injection Control permitting authority to determine applicable permit, closure, or discharge requirements.
