Are your Michigan estimates and added-work approvals documented correctly?

Michigan requires a written estimate when diagnosis, service, or repair will cost $50 or more unless a permitted waiver applies. A repair facility must obtain additional authorization before work exceeds the original estimate by more than 10% or $50, whichever is less. Facilities also have final-invoice, consumer-information-sign, mechanic-identification, and repair-record requirements.

Quick check

For jobs at $50 or more, verify a written estimate or valid waiver exists, and confirm added work over 10% or $50, whichever is less, was authorized before the work was performed.

When this applies

Your Michigan business is licensed as a motor vehicle repair facility and performs diagnosis, service, or repair work for customers.

Check that jobs at $50 or more receive a compliant written estimate or permitted waiver, that added work above the statutory threshold is authorized before it is performed, and that the final invoice contains the required repair, parts, charge, and mechanic information.
