Is your New York inspection station properly licensed and equipped?

New York DMV requires an authorized inspection-station facility and certified inspector(s). Public inspection stations must also have a registered repair shop at the same location, and relevant station classes must satisfy CR-79 and facility requirements VS-143. Since December 1, 2023, inspection stations must have appropriate computerized inspection/NYVIP3 equipment. Certain public emissions station licenses may be subject to a statewide cap; diesel and inspection-group tools vary by the work offered.

Quick check

Confirm inspection-station authorization, associated repair-shop registration, licensed inspectors, station signs, and NYVIP3/CVIS equipment for your inspection groups.

When this applies

You operate or plan to open a New York public motor-vehicle safety/emissions inspection station.

Verify inspection-station approval and corresponding repair-shop registration, the certified inspectors' IDs, physical station signage, safe equipment storage, the appropriate NYVIP3/CVIS setup, and any required group-specific/diesel tools. Review CR-79 and VS-143 before expanding inspection types.
