Did a customer leave a repaired vehicle unclaimed at your Alabama shop?

Alabama DOR identifies vehicles left for repair and not reclaimed within 48 hours of repair completion or the agreed redemption date as potentially unclaimed. Its published process requires reporting the unclaimed vehicle in the state portal within five calendar days after the vehicle is considered unclaimed, a 60-day title-record hold, ownership/lien search and certified notices, and separate auction procedures. Missing reporting or owner/lienholder notices can forfeit claims to prior parking, storage and garaging charges.

Quick check

Check when the 48-hour unclaimed threshold began, file the DOR report within the required window, preserve notices, and verify the 60-day title hold before any sale.

When this applies

Your Alabama repair facility has a customer's vehicle that remains unclaimed at least 48 hours after repair completion or the agreed redemption date and you intend to use the state unclaimed-vehicle process.

Record the agreed pickup/redemption date and repair-completion date. If the vehicle becomes unclaimed, check the DOR portal's five-day reporting deadline, required NMVTIS/records lookup, certified ownership notices and auction prerequisites. Obtain legal advice before selling or imposing contested storage liens.
