Alabama extended unclaimed-vehicle title holds to 60 days in 2020

Alabama Act 2019-245 took effect January 1, 2020 and extended the title-record hold for reported unclaimed vehicles from 45 to 60 calendar days. Motor vehicles left at repair shops can enter the unclaimed-vehicle procedure when not reclaimed within 48 hours after repair completion or an agreed redemption date. The preexisting reporting, owner/lienholder notice, and public-auction steps continue to apply; this is a historical change, not a newly enacted October 2026 rule.

What to check

If a repaired vehicle is not collected, document when it qualifies as unclaimed, review Alabama DOR's five-day portal reporting and notice requirements, and check the 60-day title hold and auction rules before pursuing sale or storage claims. This 2020 change is archival, not a new 2026 deadline.
