Maryland Tire Fee Calculator: $5 New-Tire + $1 Recycling

Maryland introduced a $5 new-tire fee and increased the tire recycling fee to $1 on January 1, 2026. Both generally apply to the first sale of a qualifying new tire in Maryland, including eligible tires sold on vehicles. Our calculator shows the two fees as separate lines instead of treating the total as one tax.

Maryland tire fee: what shops need to know

Maryland introduced a $5 new-tire fee and increased the tire recycling fee to $1 on January 1, 2026. • The combined $6 applies to a qualifying first sale of a new tire; that is not necessarily the same as charging a customer an additional $6.
  • The fees are imposed on tire dealers and may be passed to the purchaser. Invoicing format can change the sales-tax treatment.
  • No-charge guarantee replacements can have different treatment than replacements sold at a reduced price.

Check the underlying state rule

We use a primary government page rather than a crowdsourced chart. The calculator models the known state-level rate only; a shop's filing obligations, exclusions, special use, inventory, sale location and tax treatment can change the result.

Questions about Maryland tire fees

Is the Maryland tire fee $5 or $6 in 2026?

For a qualifying first sale it consists of two distinct fees: $5 for the new-tire fee and $1 for the recycling fee, for a total of $6 per tire. The seller should check both charges and the transaction's first-sale status.

Does the $6 have to appear as a separate customer surcharge?

The Comptroller says the fees are imposed on the dealer, which may pass them on. If passed through as part of an undifferentiated lump sum rather than separately stated, the fees enter the taxable sales price.

What about replacement tires under warranty?

The Comptroller says no-charge replacement tires may avoid another fee when the original tire sale paid the fee. A discounted or reduced-price replacement can still attract the fee.
