CURRENT RULEVirginiaRepair / customer rights✓ Human reviewed

Are your Virginia estimate and added-work rules correct for both newer and older vehicles?

For repair work where the customer may be charged more than $25, a Virginia repair facility must provide a written estimate when the customer requests one before work begins. Once requested, work generally cannot begin until the estimate is provided and authorized. Charges cannot exceed the estimate by more than 10% without authorization, except the threshold is 20% for a vehicle at least 25 model years old. Facilities must also post the required Customer Rights sign and offer return of replaced parts subject to statutory exceptions.

Quick check

If a customer requests an estimate on work over $25, document the estimate and authorization; get approval before exceeding it by more than 10%, or 20% when the vehicle is at least 25 model years old.

When this applies

Your Virginia automobile repair facility performs repair work on customer vehicles covered by the Automobile Repair Facilities Act.

Make sure staff know the $25 written-estimate-on-request trigger, document authorization before beginning work after an estimate is requested, obtain approval before exceeding the applicable 10% or 20% threshold, and keep the required Customer Rights sign posted.
