Are your North Dakota storage charges and repairman's lien deadlines correct?

North Dakota gives qualifying garage keepers and mechanics a lien for reasonable work, materials, storage fees, and transportation costs. Storage fees under Chapter 35-13 may not begin accruing until 15 days after the owner is requested to take possession. If the shop retains possession, no filing is required to perfect the lien; if possession is relinquished, an ordinary vehicle lien statement generally must be filed electronically within 90 days after materials are furnished or labor is completed, and notice of that filing must be served on the owner or legal possessor within 30 days.

Quick check

Do not start lien-based storage until 15 days after requesting pickup; if you release the vehicle unpaid, track the 90-day filing deadline and 30-day notice after filing.

When this applies

Your North Dakota garage or mechanic repairs a vehicle at the owner's or legal possessor's request and may rely on a repairman's lien for unpaid charges.

Document the owner's request to take possession before starting the statutory storage clock. If an unpaid vehicle is released and you intend to preserve the lien, calendar the 90-day electronic filing period and 30-day owner-notice requirement.
